You know Smackdown had to be EXTRA good when I can’t complain about one thing. The show was fantastic. WWE is on such a roll with three fantastic shows starting with Backlash, Raw and last nights Smackdown. It’s like something hit Vince, like maybe the fans want to see more HOT matches and it’s those matches that made this one special week. I should also say the crowds at the shows helped too. Hot crowds, strong non wrestling segments and super matches all made for a very successful week.
First I found the video recapping the whole Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio angle really appealing. It was another excellent WWE video and it summed up all the tension between these two so well. This video carried to the first segment with Rey coming to the ring and calling out Guerrero and questioning his actions from last week. You remember what happened last week? That’s when Eddie let Rey take a beating from MNM and just walked away from him. So Eddie came out and told Mysterio that he had nothing to say. Once Guerrero entered the ring and refused to respond Rey pushed Eddie down. That caused Eddie to say that he never laid a hand on Mysterio. Rey came back with Eddie had MNM do that for him. Rey then slapped Guerrero’s face and Eddie still refused to fight Rey. This segment was done perfectly. It just made things more tense, in fact so tense that after the break Rey talked to Theodore Long about setting up a match with Eddie. And then Mr. Instigator entered the room. I am talking about Chavo Guerrero.
I was so into Chavo Guerrero sticking his two cents in about Rey slapping Uncle Eddie. Chavo continued to stir things up by putting over Uncle Eddie and telling Rey that he would never be a Guerrero. Rey said he didn’t want to be one, and hell I could understand that since he isn’t a Guerrero, but anyway then the two went at it. This was a very affective segment that continued to build the heat up not only between Eddie and Rey, but now between Rey and Chavo. Later on Long did make a match. A Street Fight with Chavo vs. Mysterio. As soon as I heard that announcement I knew without a doubt this would be a MUST SEE match. But that would come later; we again had the stuttering Matt Morgan manhandle a jobber. Again I feel that Morgan might have the wrestling ability but there’s just too much emphasis on that stuttering crap and not enough on wrestling. Like Masters we have jobbers showing up and getting squashed in seconds. And I think you know just how thrilled that makes me feel.
Booker T vs. Orlando Jordan was a good match. Booker continues to look very sharp out there. I am really enjoying his matches of late, and Jordan definitely held his own. Jordan looked good in fact I thought this was one of his strongest matches that I can remember seeing him in. Not only am I enjoying Booker, but I think his wife Sharmell is doing a neat job as Booker’s cheerleader, manager. Sharmell in WCW was okay, she didn’t stand out, but with Booker you can see her enthusiasm and I do like the two together on Smackdown. I also loved Kurt Angle the bully starting up with Sharmell backstage. Kurt was still angry with Booker for screwing him out of the title match against John Cena. Angle in that nasty way that he has informed Sharmell that he wants Booker at Judgment Day. And then Kurt tells Sharmell he wants her at ringside so that she can see Booker scream in pain once Angle applies the ankle lock on him. Kurt didn’t have the humor during this but he definitely had the intensity which made for a very entertaining segment.
MNM looked really good out there against Scotty Too Hottie and Shannon Moore. I liked this match a lot. With MNM and even Scottie teamed up with Moore, it gives a shot in the arm to the tag team division. Like many of you I think one show should have the tag teams, these way maybe strong teams could be set up. Anyway this was a fun match, and I was surprised that Scottie stopped his signature move the worm to check out Melina who purposely came up on the apron to distract him. I would think that Scottie would put his priorities in order, first you finish the worm, and then you check out the babes. Melina came through for her guys which gave them the win. After the match a very irate Rey Mysterio came running out and attacked Mercury and Nitro with a pipe. I loved this, watching him attack Nitro and Mercury really pleased me. Someone else that pleased me was JBL The Wrestling God. For some reason I found his promo excellent last night. He stayed in a very serious mode and got his point across about how he was not a quitter. There was just something about the tone of this promo and watching his facial expressions that appealed to me. We get another few minutes of Kurt Angle. Kurt is really ticked off and as he enters the ring there’s a “local” guy waiting to take part in the Kurt Invitational. But Kurt isn’t in the mood and tells the kid to leave. As the guy starts to leave, Kurt changes his mind and before you could blink, Kurt beat the hell out of this kid. Kurt took out all his frustrations out on this guy and ended it by applying the ankle lock on him. While all this was going on I thought for sure Booker would come out and help this poor defenseless kid, but Booker didn’t show up until Angle called him out.
Booker and Sharmell both came out and then Kurt started on Booker and finally got things going by calling Sharmell I believe a Gutterslut. That was it for Booker, he stormed the ring and the two went at it. Once both men were out of the ring, Booker held Angle and told Sharmell to slap Kurt. And after a little hesitation Mrs. Booker T slapped Kurt a few times. When they got back into the ring, Kurt low blowed Booker and then, Kurt eyed Sharmell. She ran but fell and Kurt looking at her in a creepy way tried to put the ankle lock on her, but he was stopped by the refs. Let me tell you I am so damn thrilled by the way this was all played out. Booker as I keep saying is like a new guy and Kurt is back to the OLD KURT. Even though this really just got going it is all going so well that I’m already waiting anxiously to see what happens next week.
We had another backstage segment with Chavo and Eddie, and again Chavo got things going. He’s so caring when it comes to his Uncle and he promised to take care of Rey during their street match, Eddie really didn’t react to anything Chavo was saying. Chavo has played his heel part very well in the last few months doing everything in his power to break up two good friends. This is another very strong angle. Between the Guerrero/Mysterio angle and the Angle/Booker feud Smackdown is definitely making a great comeback. So my guy Carlito Caribbean Cool is back in the ring. I will admit I missed Carlito’s Cabana last night. Not hearing Carlito speak is kind of a let down. His match against Bob Holly was okay, no it was good, I just didn’t get why Holly was out there. After CCC cheated to beat Holly, he then hinted that next week on my favorite show Carlito’s Cabana his guest will be Big Show and he has an offer that Show will not be able to refuse. Does that mean Carlito will challenge Show to a match at Judgment Day? Oh I would say I bet it does.
This next statement shocks me, wait maybe it will shock you, but trust me I am surprised that I’m going to say this. I really liked John Cena’s Bad Bad Man. While the A-Team theme did nothing for me, the song was really catchy. I really had no desire to watch the video, but damn the song did it for me. Okay now for the main event. I knew it would be off the charts. The Street Fight between Chavo and Rey Mysterio was the match of the night. With two high flying veterans in there I saw moves and bumps that had me yelling at times and worried at times. It was magnificent. Rey Mysterio is without a doubt a human bump machine and Chavo is right up there as well. I loved this more than words can say and watching MNM come out and even the score with Rey really got me hyped. But the ending with Eddie coming out and clearing out the ring to help his buddy Rey, wait he didn’t help his buddy he wanted us to think that’s why he was there, but watching Eddie come out clean house, Rey hugging him and then Eddie attacking Rey was one brilliant way to end the show.
I’m telling you this has been an amazing week of WWE programming. We have seen some of the best matches and really most of them are from Raw and Smackdown, in other words we got saw them for free. It’s just nice to see all the shows make such a great impression. Okay I won’t be back until Tuesday with my Raw thoughts. Since my favorite holiday is Sunday, and I’m talking about Mothers Day, I’m planning on being pampered by my husband and son. I hope they know I’m expecting a lot from them. Yeah lots of presents, food and relaxation, ah to be waited oh. Okay have a great weekend and I’ll be back on Tuesday.
