I mentioned on Friday that matches for Backlash are anything but predictable. So I finally came up with my predictions, and then I realized that every winner that I picked was a face. That bothered me, now there’s no law that says the show can’t have all faces win their matches, but it just seems a little bit weird to me. So after doing a little re-thinking, okay a lot of re-thinking my predictions looks a lot different then what I sent some of you over the weekend. Listen at the rate I’m going, I’ll be lucky to break even. Hey it’s just for fun right? See I keep trying to remember that, okay seriously let me get right to the matches. By the way I have a feeling another match might be added but as of now Backlash has six matches and I’m going to start with one that many of you might not know about.
The Tag Team Turmoil Title Match – Regal/Tajiri vs. The Heart Throbs vs. Maven/Simon Dean vs. Hurricane/Rosey vs. La Resistance
Right off my first thought was that just like Smackdown’s MNM The Heart Throbs would take this one and parade their new tag team titles on Raw for a while. Then I thought, no, I don’t feel the Heart Throbs made the kind of impact that MNM did when they first debuted. So then I ruled out La Resistance. I’m hoping after this they get repackaged and never do that gimmick again. I also ruled out Hurricane and Rosey because they don’t seem to be used consistently. Because of this, I figured Regal and Tajiri would remain the champions. But then, with my illogical thinking, I can’t go with them, I need to find two heels that will walk off with the titles, and those lucky two heels are Simon Dean and Maven. Now this match should be okay and I expect it to be the first match of the show. It should move pretty fast and if I get this right, damn I’ll look good. If I lose this, I know I’m in for a very night.
Winner: Simon Dean and Maven
Kane (Lita) vs. Viscera (Trish)
Again like the tag team match, my first thought was to go with Viscera. But then I figured two things. One, Kane doesn’t seem to get may pay per view wins, and 2. This could be the match where Kane and Lita become so violent and nasty that Kane gets the win, Lita becomes a heel and that’s that. But again I am switching to Viscera, because the rest of my picks are all faces I need that one heel prediction again. Also a Vis win means more Viscera going to Trish to get paid for what he was hired to do. And we all know what that payment is supposed to be. Now off hand I don’t know about this match, but I am thinking with Trish out there and those Matt chants in Lita’s face, the women and the fans could make this passable.
Winner: Viscera
The Last Man Standing Match – Edge vs. Chris Benoit
I can’t wait to watch this match. I know it’s going to be one of the best if not the BEST on the card. I have to go with Benoit because Edge at Wrestlemania Edge won the Money in the Bank match, and now I would hope that Chris gets to win this important match. Look for both men to work their butts off and keep you on the edge of your seats as the match goes on.
Winner: Chris Benoit
IC Title – Chris Jericho vs. Shelton Benjamin
Here’s another top match of the night. You are looking at two guys that not only know how to wrestle but they know how to keep the fans totally into what they are doing. Just like the Last Man Standing match I can’t wait to see these two tear it up in the ring. Benjamin’s athletic ability at times can make you question how the hell did he do that? Jericho is an all around performer, so this match should definitely be a crowd pleaser.
Winner: Shelton Benjamin
Hulk Hogan-Shawn Michaels vs. Muhammad Hassan and Daivari
Yesterday I got a phone call from the Hulkster hyping the Backlash pay per view. How lucky was I that he decided to call me. Okay I know it was taped and thousands of others got a call too, I wanted to see if I could put one past all of you, but I’m the gullible one not my readers. Anyway I will say Hogan was so pumped on this message that I really got excited about his match and the show. There is no doubt in my mind that Hassan will finally be pinned and it’s going to be Hogan that gets the pin and the win. I know with Shawn in there he’s going to carry this match, but I’m definitely not taking a thing a way from Hassan and Daivari, I feel both men are going to look very sharp out there. And Hogan will be Hogan to much of the fan’s delight and this will all turn out to be a fun and decent match.
Winners: Hogan/HBK
World Title – Batista vs. Triple H
There is a theory going around. It’s not mine but here it is. Since there’s supposed to be a third re-match in June at Vengeance with these two in a Hell In A Cell match, Hunter will win tonight and lose it back to Batista in June. I’m not buying into that one. I’m going with Dave all the way. Now it has hit me that since Christian doesn’t have a match which I don’t get maybe he would come out and help Hunter defeat Batista. But I still don’t see the Animal losing tonight. I can’t say that this match will be outstanding I figure it will be basically what we saw at Wrestlemania. A good match just not a great match, but when it’s all over and done with, Batista will remain the champion.
Winner: Batista
So while this might not be the strongest pay per view of the year, but there are a few matches that should help make Backlash a success. I will try to have something on the show tomorrow if not then Tuesday with my Raw thoughts. Enjoy the show if you are going to watch it. If you don’t plan to order it, check out those recaps and see how the show is shaping up, and more importantly see if I get any predictions right.
