One’s the longest reigning WWE champion in a decade. The other is a ten time World Heavyweight champion. Both have something in common: they are hell bent on defeating and embarrassing their challengers on the grandest stage of them all WrestleMania 21. John Bradshaw Layfield and Triple H, both from their respective brands, have dominated the WWE as the number one heel’s on both brands. Triple H has lead Raw as the brands one man to beat, literally every one on Raw has his number. JBL is the self-proclaimed “wrestling god”, and a WWE champion on mission. Together they form two of WWE’s top superstars, top heels, and top champions. The WWE and World Heavyweight titles will be defended at ‘Mania against two unlucky opponents:
One’s a animal unleashed out of jealousy and rage. The other is a life long thug demanding his spot as champion. Both men like the champions are hell bent on winning, and taking the titles from the incumbent champions. No one ever said it was easy. But Batista and John Cena both know the task at hand. They’ve seen the domination displayed in the ring by both Triple H and John Bradshaw Layfield. They know the heinous crimes JBL and Triple H are capable of. And they know like the back of their hand, that both champions will do everything in there powers to retain their respective belts and get the last laugh at the “showcase of the immortals.” John Cena represents everything the fans want. A wrestler the fans can identify with, and “drink a beer” with. He’s the peoples champion, well, without the championship. And Batista. Well Batista is the animal. The biggest, baddest, and probably the toughest WWE superstar on the Raw roster. No one has dominated leading up to WrestleMania like the animal, Batista.
At ‘Mania these four man will be in two battles, two matches, and two chances to either gain or regain the WWE and World Heavyweight titles. The WWE champion, John Bradshaw Layfield will defend his prized belt against the man of the streets John Cena. Cena who in my eyes has made his name in the WWE by identifying and connecting with the fans, will be getting his first major PPV chance since losing to Brock Lesnar as a rookie after WrestleMania XIX. He’s ready to fight, and JBL is ready to defend his belt one on one with the “People’s champ” himself. Pompous, egotistical, and arrogant. JBL went from Bradshaw to Layfield literally over night. And can any one claim they’ve done more then JBL has in ten months? He went from jobber to champion, from stale to exciting. And from the bottom of the barrel, to SmackDown’s number one superstar. He’s not the longest reigning champion in ten years for nothing. His resume of wins is impressive: Undertaker, Eddie Guerrero, Kurt Angle, Big Show, Booker T, Hardcore Holly, and almost every other superstar on the SmackDown roster. When John Cena faces JBL he won’t be facing just another wrestler. He’ll be facing the man who is unbeatable in the WWE. The man whose championship reign has been marked by his ability to successfully defend the WWE championship. You want my honest professional opinion on who should be WWE champion at the end of ‘Mania? John Bradshaw Layfield. He deserves it for all the hard work he’s displayed over the last ten months, through the thick and the thin. But who do I think will win? John Cena. At first, when I realized the odds of John Cena winning were high I was a little split. I mean could Cena really replace the legacy JBL had, and can he successfully defend the WWE championship? Look at Orton, when he got a taste of World Heavyweight gold his career took a turn for the worse. Would this happen to Cena? I think in the last few weeks, Cena has proven so much I didn’t realize about him. Number one, how well he clicks with the audience. Once he gets a microphone the fans are literally out of their sits. Number two, I realized JBL was a good wrestler in the ring but Cena was a heck of a lot better. And lastly, I realized that out of all the superstars on the Thursday night roster he’s been the one whose patiently waited his turn, and earned his spot. And he’ll get his spot at WrestleMania 21. I must admit the odds are stacked against him, but at the end of the night I believe John Cena will unseat the “wrestling god”. And take the crown from the self-proclaimed greatest champion of all time.
Now onto Triple H. Triple H will be defending the World Heavyweight championship against a opponent that several months ago seemed unlikely. Former Evolution ally, Batista will challenge the incumbent World champion one on one, at the grandest stage of them all. Batista, whose always been in the limelight as a Evolution member, has never really gotten the chance at a World title run. And while his turn on Triple H was expected, I never expected what happened to follow. The animal has been unleashed, and at WrestleMania the champ will have his toughest challenge yet. Not Orton. Not Benoit. Not Michaels. Not Jericho. But Batista. Looking at Triple H’s list of failed challengers it becomes clear his reign on the top has been impressive: Stone Cold, Undertaker, Rock, Steiner, RVD, Jericho, Michaels, Orton, and others. He’s virtually beaten everyone on Raw, everyone but Batista. The ten time champion will have to beat his former friend, and a man he’s never officially defeated. Triple H normally has the advantage of the David Versus Goliath approach when it comes to matches, but with Batista the approach is the other way around. Triple H doesn’t phase the animal, and Batista has the advantage of not only size but strength as well. The odds seem against Triple H, but as we know that’s when the “Cerebral Assassin” works best. It will be a championship match for the ages. In the end, I think the animal will prevail ending Triple H’s tenth World Heavyweight championship run. The animal has been unleashed, and at WrestleMania 21the animal will put Triple H down.
The incumbents may have the edge. But don’t count John Cena nor Batista out for the count. Both have the ability, the chance, and the center stage spot to take the title belts from Triple H and John Bradshaw Layfield. Personally, I think both Triple H and JBL have had successful runs as champion, but it’s time to pass on the torch. I proclaimed in my “Passing Down” column it was time for Layfield to pass his WWE title to a new champion. I said John Cena was the likeable candidate. I think the same thing for the Raw main event at ‘Mania with Batista. The animal is probably the fastest rising superstar on Raw. Size, speed, wrestling ability, and fan support will be backing Batista tomorrow night. Add that with Cena’s brawl for it all tactics, charisma, wrestling ability, and fan support. The WWE champion and Heavyweight champion’s will have a run for there money. But in the end Batista and John Cena will ultimately get there chance, there shot to defeat two men unstoppable and unbeatable and take their prized title belts. The grand daddy of them all, the showcase of the immortals. Two men will challenge. John Cena and Dave Batista. Two men will defend. John Bradshaw Layfield and Triple H. The incumbents.
Till next time……
