One of my readers, and I believe her name is Ashley and if I’m wrong I apologize but she asked me if I could talk about Velocity. I liked that idea since it’s one of my favorite WWE’s shows to watch. Trust me I have a lot to say about Velocity, and I’m very glad she came up with the idea.
Velocity for many years seemed to be the show where the guys on the lower end of the WWE roster would perform. I found Heat to be a much better show to watch. However, I would say within the last year Velocity has become a show that I hate to miss, and yeah there are times when I have forgotten to tape it because I forgot, or because Spike TV kept changing Velocity’s time slot. But now a days I try to make sure I don’t miss an episode Let me tell you why. When it first came on it was Tazz and Michael Cole. I was used to both of them since they do Smackdown. But there was really nothing of interest for me during that time. Then Cole left and was replaced by Josh Matthews. Josh having that job surprised me and truthfully I wasn’t happy with him coming in. Tazz was able to make things decent enough for me to continue watching, but once Tazz was out and Ernest The Cat Miller was in, that was it for me. During that time Matthews came off so green and so out of his league, and Miller did nothing to make things better, these two guys had absolutely no chemistry what so ever. I would watch the show but I would question why I would bother since Josh and The Cat were so bad at announcing. I couldn’t even follow a match because their play by play and so called light banter between each other just took away from the matches.
But I continued to watch and things greatly improved when The Cat was out and Bill DeMott was in. It was like magic, DeMott and Matthews clicked immediately. All of a sudden the Josh that made me cringe was appealing to listen too. DeMott played the heel announcer and found lots of ways to insult his colleague Josh. I’ll tell you this was like a breath of fresh air listening to both of these men. It also seemed to turn the show around completely. Now the matches were worth watching, and Josh and Bill seemed to be getting more into things. And I also noticed that when Smackdown was at its worst, Velocity started showcasing some of the guys that Smackdown didn’t. And these matches were so good I would constantly tell my husband, (my poor husband, gets the good and bad about wrestling from me all the time) if any of these matches would have been on Smackdown, Smackdown would have come off so much better. Velocity was definitely back on track.
Just as I was really enjoying the announce team, Bill DeMott was gone, and now we have a new guy, Steve Romero, a former sports announcer from Kansas City joining Josh. I can’t tell you how bad I felt that Bill DeMott was replaced. His arrogance and sarcasm added so much to the show and as I said Josh and Bill hit it off immediately and now he’s gone and Velocity has yet
another new Steve Romero has come through and as much as I miss DeMott, I do enjoy Romero and Josh as a team. But they don’t get all the credit for Velocity being such a good show, they are just a part of it. The matches that Velocity offers is really what makes this a must see show. By the way another thing about Velocity is the matches are not rushed, sure if there’s someone out there that’s not cutting it you want it to fly by, but for the most part the time that these guys are given is perfect. Velocity seems to be the home of the cruiserweights and Bob Holly and Charlie Haas. And let me tell you for a woman that is so not into Bob Holly when he and Haas are out there my eyes are peeled on their matches. Yeah that’s how good the Holly/Haas tag team is. They can make a tag team with jobbers look good in the ring. And it’s funny because when Holly and Haas perform the fans seem to really appreciate it. It’s not piped in noise it’s the real thing. You can see the majority of fans get wrapped up into their matches. Velocity has given Bob Holly a place to really show off his wrestling. And it shows why Charlie Haas should be used on Smackdown, this guy has a lot to offer and needs to get a push to the main show.
Then you have the cruiserweights, Chavo, Akio, Paul London, Shannon Moore, Spike Dudley, Scotty Too Hotty, Billy Kidman, Funaki and Nunzio. I don’t remember a bad match with any of these guys. When you have a cruiserweight match you are almost guaranteed that you are going to see a top match. Every one of these guys comes out and kills themselves out there. Velocity or Smackdown doesn’t mean a thing to them they are there to give the fans their all.
Last night I watched a really good match with Spike Dudley taking on Scotty Too Hotty. Now the Scotty gimmick got stale along long time ago, but last night Scotty looked like a million bucks as did Spike. This match definitely could have been on Smackdown, but again it wasn’t rushed and we all know on Smackdown these guys would have been given maybe 3 minutes if that. Velocity definitely showcases the guys that Smackdown doesn’t seem to have time for. And one man that seems to be emerging as a major star is Paul London.
I am so pleased with his matches on Velocity. They are making London a force to be reckoned with and he’s showing each week that he deserves the push that he’s getting. You add his “nemesis” Akio to the mixture and their main events have been so awesome. Last night Paul and Akio kept the trend going with another great match but this time at the announce table was the Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero. While Chavo’s mic work isn’t the best he still did a nice job being a jerk. He was out there watching London vs. Akio for the number one contender spot of “his” title. This was as good as it gets and London won and I’m hoping that London vs. Chavo is ON for Wrestlemania.
Well there you go, I’m a Velocity addict and proud of it. All I can say is if wrestling is your thing and you don’t feel Smackdown is offering enough really check out Velocity. And for the fans here in the States I’m hoping that once WWE is done with Spike TV which I believe will be in September and are back on the USA network, that network will plug Velocity which might get more fans to give it a try.
It’s on to Raw in Atlanta, Georgia and Chris Benoit vs. Triple H has been already decided by Batista in the Pick Your Poison match. Will Hunter finally get a win over Benoit? Or will Dave interfere, cost Triple H a victory and piss Hunter off even more? Another match that has been made is Kane vs. Christian and Tyson Tomko in a handicap match. This should be good with Christian’s buddy right there to help him play dirty. I cannot wait to see Trish’s reaction after getting the Twist of Fate from Christy last week, I have a feeling Trish will be one angry woman. If Taker and Randy Orton are signing their contract on Smackdown, does that mean that HBK and Kurt Angle could have some kind of showdown on Raw? I hope so. I’m looking forward to tomorrow night’s show, remember after tomorrow’s show there are only two Raw’s left before Wrestlemania.
