I just got home from work. I was going to post my column earlier, but there’s so much to say about New Years Revolution and Raw that I wanted to take my time and not rush anything. So what I am going to do is post this in two parts. The first will be about New Years Revolution, and tomorrow part two will be about Raw. I want to break the shows up because I want to mention as much as I can and not leave out really important segments. But before I go on I want to thank you all for your concern and prayers for my mother. She is home, thankfully alert and talking much better. She’s very weak but she will get some therapy to try to build up her legs. So thank you all for caring and emailing me about my mom’s situation. Now for my New Years Revolution thoughts. By the way, I missed only one, that’s right just one. That was the Lita/Trish match. My money was on Lita, so I’m pretty satisfied with myself. Okay enough about me let me talk about one bad pay per view.
There is no doubt in my mind that the back to back injuries of Eugene and Lita really set the tone for a kind of depressing show. There were other factors that didn’t help but watching both wrestlers hurt their left knees in such freak ways was very sad and very frightening. After the first two injuries I was waiting for more to happen. The show really got off to a horrible start. I will say this; the crowd was really good you could tell they were excited to be there. And as I said with Eugene and Lita’s problems how could it not bring the crowd down. The first match with Eugene and William Regal vs. Christian and Tomko was good. It was nothing more than a Raw match, but Eugene was “ON.” Eugene really had the crowd behind him and his humor was outstanding Sunday night. Unfortunately I didn’t feel that the crowd was that in love with William Regal. And I thought that Regal was in the match just a little too long. There were times it just got a little boring but Eugene managed to pick things up. I did like the match and it really bothered me to see Eugene go for that dropkick and then collapse onto the mat. You could tell that he was hurt and it showed on his face. But Eugene did everything he could to keep things going and finish the match. Eugene came through and it was amazing how he wasn’t going to call it quits. Also Regal earlier had another nose bleed. Do you remember a few years ago when just about every week Regal’s nose would bleed and he wound up having surgery to correct it? I’m wondering if Regal too will be next in line for surgery. With Eugene out I expect some kind of tournament to see who the new tag team winners will be. So even with their pay per view win on Sunday it’s a big loss for the company and the fans with Eugene expected to be out for awhile due to knee surgery.
Lita vs. Trish was next. But first there was a backstage segment with Edge propositioning Christian about becoming the world champion. I will admit I was curious to find out what that was about, but that would have to wait until later. It was Lita defending her title against Trish, and this match never took off. There was a little wrestling in the ring before Trish was on the floor and Lita attempted a Thesz press. As soon as Lita it the floor like Eugene earlier she grabbed the left knee and you knew that was it for her. The women took the match back into the ring, and again just like Eugene Lita tried very hard to continue, but she couldn’t put any weight on her leg. Trish finally got the pin and thankfully the match was over. By this time I’m really shocked, saddened and as I said earlier depressed the way things are going. After Lita was helped backstage, Edge, Christian and Eric Bischoff are discussing Edge’s idea. He’s put out that Shawn Michaels is the ref and he wants Eric to replace him with Christian. Well Mr. Bischoff wasn’t going to change a thing and he went on how the fans paid to see the six guys that were booked for this one. So Edge lost the argument and then ran into Shawn. Shawn assured him that he would call the match fairly, however if someone put their hands on him he would have to retaliate. Edge and Shawn definitely have some nice chemistry and I figured Shawn would play a part in the chamber match where Edge was concerned. But before that match, things really get bad. Instead of watching Maven and Shelton wrestle for the IC title. Maven ducked out of the ring and started bashing the crowd. Maven couldn’t take the anti Maven chants that the fans were dishing out. Okay let me say this; Maven did a terrific job on the mic and really riled the crowd up. However, I would have preferred to watch Shelton and Maven go at it in the ring instead of Maven losing to Shelton in a matter of a few seconds. Yeah after Maven decided to walk away from the match, the ref started counting him out. He ran back into the ring and Shelton grabbed him for the win.
As Shelton started to walk to the back, Maven started complaining, and said the match didn’t count. He said WWE had two women champions and continued to trash talk him. So I’m thinking okay now a regular match will take place. This is all fine I don’t mind this. But wouldn’t you know it as soon as Shelton got back into the ring Maven received a T-Bone suplex and lost again. Because of all of this I’m thinking Maven must be hurt, but then I’m reading that their matches at the house shows were sub par and WWE didn’t want to put Maven out there. If this is the case, they should never have given this push to Maven. Work with him and then give him the push. Well by this time I’m really rather pissed with what I’m watching. And it doesn’t get any better. In fact it gets downright horrible. I’m keeping this real short. The Lawler/Hassan match was beyond bad. I knew when the match was made it was going to be a dud and I was right. It seems like the match just went on and on. This wasn’t a match to see just what Hassan was capable of in the ring; this was just a total disaster. And things didn’t get much better. Kane vs. Snitzky wasn’t anything to rave about. The only positive I can say about this was that Kane for a change came out on FIRE. I will say that he shined in this one; Snitzky didn’t seem to sell any of Kane’s moves. This was bad but nothing like the match before it.
I will not even bother to waste my time on the diva’s sunbathing and playing chicken in the pool. I would much rather talk about the Elimination Chamber match. Many of you emailed me and liked it but not as much as the others. While the first one was the BEST, because it was so new, I thought Sunday’s was excellent. Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho did one super job. Those two guys worked their asses off almost throughout the whole match. Hunter, Edge Randy Orton Batista also put a lot into this, and then there was Sweet Chin Music from HBK to Edge and this was one fine match. This match kept the show from being a total waste of time. And as far as Hunter winning it’s the right thing to do. There is no way Benoit and Jericho will get that title, and I’m not saying that’s right, because both men are totally worthy of it. So Hunter winning is a way to set up either Batista or Orton for Wrestlemania and then lose it to one of them. That’s how I’m looking at it. Hunter doesn’t need that belt but right now it seems the logical thing to do. Everyman in this match including Shawn did a hell of a job, and this match was far better than I ever imagined it would be.
This match was outstanding and it’s ashame I can’t say that about the rest of the show. Tomorrow I will talk about Raw. I’m not one for splitting up my column, but I think it’s the only way to go this time around.
