For best actor the award goes to Paul Heyman, for the tremendous job he did last night on Smackdown. I loved him last night, and I loved Smackdown. What a major improvement from last weeks show. The two hours went very fast and I’ll tell you it felt like Heyman was back in the driver’s seat because the writing was so much better.
I want to thank Vince for staying off most of the show. The little he was on was very effective. True, he did overact, but I had no problem with it since the Vince that was overacting was a very scared and whacko Vince. What a nice change from the stud Vince that we’ve been seeing week after week. Vince and Paul Heyman had two great scenes together with Heyman stealing both of them. Last night was definitely Paul’s night. And the way Heyman portrayed himself was brilliant. Like Vince, Paul kept his appearances short, but showed his serious business side which made his General Manager job really mean something. Props to both men for adding to a very entertaining Smackdown.
There were hardly any matches last night. The best of the show had to be the opener with Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit vs. John Cena and A-Train. I enjoyed Cena’s rap and I loved watching this one. It was a super match, and I really feel Cena is turning face SOON, very soon. Now I was just getting into the Ultimo Dragon vs. Rey Mysterio match but then it was over. I liked it but would have preferred to see it go on a lot longer. I’m very happy with Tajiri’s character and having his two “buddies” escort him really adds to things. Tajiri seems to be getting a nice push and I’m thrilled about that. And the main event with Brock Lesnar and Big Show vs. APA was not exactly my idea for a main event. It was done all right but I’m not all that happy about APA all of a sudden getting into main angles and matches.
Last night Eddie Guerrero got hell from his nephew Chavo for losing their tag team titles. Chavo did all he could to make Eddie feel like a nothing. This brought Eddie out to the ring to apologize to the fans and to his family for letting them down. Now I love Eddie and he did a great job but this thing went on way too long. I did like it when Shaniqua came out with the tag team belts to gloat in front of Eddie. And I knew it was a trap, that the Bashams would catch Eddie by surprise and beat the hell out of him, which they did. That was all good, but as I said half of Eddie’s promo could have been cut. And you guys were treated to Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson having a trick or treat contest. Talk about a team player there’s just about nothing Dawn won’t do, I’ll tell you she would have gotten my vote for best costume. I loved Funaki with his big Afro and it was kind of cool seeing Tazz get thrown in the tub of chocolate instead of Funaki.
As you can see Smackdown wasn’t about matches, it was about setting up Survivor Series. Let’s see on the Raw side we have Team Bischoff vs. Team Austin. And on the Smackdown side we now have Team Angle vs. Team Lesnar. I’m kind of turned off by Team Lesnar. Well in fact by Team Angle too. Let’s see Team Lesnar is of course, Brock, with Big Show and two guys that I feel should not be anywhere in this group. I’m talking about Nathan Jones and Matt Morgan. Jones showed me nothing the first time he was brought up. Now he’s been working in OVW, so hopefully he’s learned a lot, and Matt Morgan, I know he’s from OVW too, and he might be something to see, but why put these two in immediately? Hold them off for Smackdown matches at least for a while. Your telling me that there is no one backstage that could be in this? I know Vince loves big men and that’s proven with Brock’s team, but why not put Tajiri in there, and Rey or Dragon on Team Angle’s side? See there’s possibilities. There is nothing wrong with pushing new talent but don’t bring them in at the last minute and put them into a main event.
And as far as Angle’s team goes, Holly and the APA just don’t fit in as well. I will say this; I have a feeling that Faarooq is totally out of that match due to the beating he got by Brock and Big Show. And his replacement, JOHN CENA, yeah Cena becomes a fan favorite and is part of the team. And if that happens at least Angle’s team is looking better. Okay, there’s two Smackdowns to go so let’s see what Jones and Morgan have and let’s see what Holly has to offer. Maybe by the time Survivor Series comes up I will be more into The Team Angle, Team Lesnar match.
Listen, Smackdown still WORKED and WORKED very well for me I loved it and I can’t wait until next week’s show. What a great week for wrestling, Raw and Smackdown came through, I’m always happy when I can say that.
