Remember the day when Macho Man vs. Ric Flair and Kevin Sullivan vs. Chris Benoit was the reason we tuned into wrestling? Is it possible that those days of in ring action we saw 10 years ago was more entertaining then what we see today?
Often it’s hard not to wonder just what the sport of pro wrestling would be like if it was more like the old days of WCW
The day Vince McMahon bought out WCW will forever be remembered as a good day for some and bad for others to me the purchase was a mistake by both parties involved. WCW was the competition for then WWF now WWE, when WCW was sold we the fans lost a lot, such as, a other to WWE television. If we did not like WWE we would simply switch the channel. Also lost on that day were many great talented wrestlers, and promoters, not to mention great storylines and creative minds.
Before we had a choice we could watch Raw or Nitro, Thunder or SmackDown. Now our choices are Raw or SmackDown both under the control of Vince McMahon and the same creative team. What Vince says happens, is what happens, and what he does not want to happen, does not happen. Before if we hated Vince McMahon’s idea all we needed to do is pick up the remote and turn to a different show called WCW. If we did not like WCW we would watch WWE, it was as simple as that. We were able to see more creative storylines and better products because both promotions constantly tried to win over the fans whether it was live television, cage matches, or TLC matches, there was defiantly a superior choice in what to watch. Which made wrestling designed for the fans, now who cares what the fans want, there is one solid wrestling program on cable TV and its called WWE, only other choice we have now is to stop watching wrestling and watch Monday Night Football. Of course there is TNA, but they have not yet signed a TV deal. thus making their events cost money on PPV. Before we saw the DDT now we see the Stunner. Before we saw the Hart Foundation now we see Evolution. Before we saw in ring action, now it would be upsetting in the match did not go outside the ring. Before we saw the American flag being waved proudly by Hacksaw Jim Duggan, now we see the Dudley Boys being buried with it. Before it was believable, now were expected to believe Kane can be burned one week and fine the next. Before wrestling was more creative more believable more fun to follow, now the same creative team who is obviously close to running out of ideas does the whole lot.
Even is Vince brought back WCW it would not matter, because Vince would still have final say over what takes place on the show, what we need is another wrestling promotion on cable TV, what we need is someone to give WWE a ride for there money, what we need is TNA NWA to become the “other” to WWE. Then perhaps the old days which a majority of us fans loved will return, but then again all this is just one man’s theory.
