I’m getting a lot of emails today praising Smackdown. I would say the show was fair, in fact I would say Smackdown was just an average show last night. Nothing stood out except for TWO STRONG SEGMENTS. I expected more since Sunday is SummerSlam. Smackdown has been so good I guess every show can’t be a winner.
Maybe I should credit Vince McMahon for my feelings toward last night’s show. The opening with Kurt Angle and Vince did nothing for me. I found it very blah. And the fact that Vince had to continue to show up just ticked me off. Vince and Big Show backstage chatting was just another way to keep Vince on TV, it was a meaningless skit. But wait here’s Vince again, this time with Brock. And again, another wasted segment. So three segments in less than 45 minutes with Vince was more than I needed. And as much as Vince got to me I also should credit Michael Cole for bugging the hell out of me last night.
Each week Cole is getting to me more and more. While Jonathan Coachman is quiet and doesn’t show a lot of life during the shows, Cole is the total opposite. To say he over does it would be an understatement. Michael Cole might be the nicest guy in the world, but his announcing is annoying and I really wish he would tone it down, A LOT! So as you can see my mood during the show was not the best.
None of the matches were bad, but other than two segments that I will talk about in a little bit, nothing else was that outstanding. I am so tired of Rey Mysterio’s Cruiserweight Title meaning nothing. This title should be defended on a regular basis. Last night’s match with Matt was good, but again nothing out of the ordinary. Why can’t Vince just build up that division and make it seem important? He’s got the talent, but again he makes nothing out of the Cruiserweights. The match with Tajiri and Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero and Rhyno was done very well, but again nothing spectacular. Other matches such as, John Cena and A-Train vs. Taker and Orlando Jones, and The Bashams taking on Billy Gunn and Jamie Noble were decent. But something was definitely lacking last night. That is, until Brock Lesnar came out to wrestle Zach, boy did my mood change, and change for the better.
Watching Brock beat the hell out of Zach Gowen was amazing. What a way to make Brock look like a piece of crap. To see Zach’s mother pleading for Brock to stop and the anguish on her face just added to this segment. I loved it from beginning to end.
The other match that I loved last night was Kurt Angle vs. Big Show. Last week Big
Show against Undertaker was dull, but again Angle brought the best out in Show and this main event was awesome. Both men gave 110% in that ring last night. The main event and Lesnar vs. Zach made Smackdown a decent show. I will say that WWE did a great job of making me wonder who walks out with the title on Sunday, Brock or Kurt?
So on to SummerSlam and on Sunday I will have my predictions. By the way I’ve read on a few sites that Matt Hardy and Zach’s match is off for Sunday. It would only make sense, since Brock supposedly broke Zach’s leg. Also it’s being reported that there will only be seven matches for the show. With seven matches I’m sure there will be a few lengthy matches, and hopefully these matches will come off very well.
