Monday night on RAW, the most asked question was by Stone Cold being, “who kicked your ass last Thursday?” Well I have a question of my own for Stone Cold Steve Austin, and that question would be why are you still the WWF Heavyweight champion? Ok, now that I have asked my question, allow me to explain why I wonder about that.
Ever since Austin won the Heavyweight belt at WrestleMania, it seems that more times then not, he has been hurt in someway, resulting him to be involved in many backstage segments or skits rather then actually wrestling. If you’re hurt, then you’re hurt, I won’t take that away from you, but if you can’t wrestle for a long period of time, then why is he still your heavyweight champion? The WWF hoping that the less educated wrestling fans may not notice, but to someone likes me who keeps up to date with the latest happenings in wrestling, it does somewhat bother me. He is the champion, the best in the business, and when he can’t wrestle for a long period of time, that is a problem. I commend him for wrestling at Invasion even though he still could have used the more time off.
The WWF wants to keep the belt on Austin, so when him and The Rock are ready to feud again, Rock can compete for the belt. I really hope that Rock and Austin feud following Summerslam, because in my opinion, Austin has not yet had an opponent that actually had any chance of winning the belt since he won it. It was pretty obvious that at Backlash, Undertaker and Kane would lose the Tag Team Titles to Triple H and Austin, so Austin would not lose the belt there. It didn’t look like either Austin or Jericho would beat Austin at the King of The Ring. At Invasion, Austin’s belt wasn’t even on the line. Austin defended the belt against Spike on a non-PPV and everyone knew Spike wasn’t going to win it. When Benoit had two title shots on RAW and Smackdown back before King of The Ring, for a small moment I thought they might have Benoit win the match only to lose it at the next show, but that didn’t happen.
I can’t stand the fact that Austin is at the top of the WWF or the Alliance if you want to get technical. He earned the spot when he one the belt at WrestleMania, but since then, he hasn’t done much of anything. When you can’t wrestle for a long period of time, then you are not champion material. Like I said, the WWF wants to keep the belt on Austin so he will have it when he feuds with The Rock. I understand what they are trying to do that, but even if it made him look weaker, would it have been such a bad thing if he maybe lost the belt to Angle two weeks ago and then won it back at Summerslam? Would it have been a bad thing for him to lose it to Benoit for two weeks and win it back at King of The Ring? Maybe they held out on Benoit cause when he does win the Heavyweight title, they want him to have a long reign. But Angle held that belt already, so if he won it a few weeks ago and then lost it at Summerslam, that would not have been the worst thing in the world. It wouldn’t make Austin look any weaker; it might in fact bring up the heel heat.
I do agree with the fact that it was a good thing that he had the belt before the Invasion PPV. It would mean a lot more for Austin to defect to the Alliance as the WWF champion rather then just being Austin without the WWF title.
As a clarification, I am not against Austin because he is a heel. I would have loved it if he was wrestling on almost every RAW and Smackdown as a heel. Austin plays a great heel and I hope they keep him like that at least until the end of the year. But in his current state, he is not championship material. Unless he can get healthy and actually wrestle after Summerslam leading to the next PPV, then he can keep his belt. My opinion is that if it were the Undertaker that won the Heavyweight title belt at WrestleMania and still had it today, and was hurt the way Austin was, they would have made him lost that belt to someone weeks ago. Why? That’s simple, his name is not Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Now finally, for those of you that read my other column Mark My Words on the ‘net, mostly referring to PlasticSword.com, you may remember my special section at the end of my columns. The section has been named The Callings and contains a “awards” or “non-awards” from different categories. They are included just for fun, so hopefully you will look forward to them at the end of my editorials.
BUM OF THE WEEK:
(This goes out to someone who in some way, did something stupid or selfish. It doesn’t matter if it was in the ring, backstage, or at the airport, if they did something stupid, they qualify for this award.)
Buff Bagwell for refusing to job to Steve Corino at the Brian Pillman show this past Thursday.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
(Sometimes there is a match or promo that just sticks out from everything else. It may be so good that it deserves to not be forgotten just yet. That is what this section is for.)
The Rock and Jericho promo making fun of Stephanie, Rhyno, and Booker T will be in memory for many weeks to come.
SMACK OF THE WEEK:
(You see it all the time at other wrestling sites, reporters doing everything they can to get more hits for their site. They go as far as false advertising at the bottom of their newsboard post at other sites. This section takes the week’s stupidest phony plug and will give him a plug he or she will never forget!)
The first victim? Sorry I won’t mention names (not for now at least), but the site is wrestlingdotcom.com. The plug relates to Stephane McMahon’s breast implants that she did receive. Here is what the plug said below which came from what in my opinion would be one of the biggest joke wrestling sites on the net, iowrestling.com.
## eXXXclusive ## – Steph’s Boobs REVEALED HERE!*[>>}
To the reporter who posted this, hey don’t complain, you got a free plug!
BEYOND THE SOAP:
(Wrestling is a soap opera right? There is always something that comes from a RAW, Smackdown, or PPV that prooves what we watch is nothing but a soap.)
Funny how on RAW, Austin was insulting a few Alliance stars who have lost the previous week. Did he forget that Palumbo and O’Hare lost the WCW Tag Team belts the week before?
XTREME ODDS:
(Again, just for fun, taking current situations, adding a little twist at possible scenarios.)
Odds of who will be RVD’s opponent at Summerslam.
* Jeff Hardy– 2:1
* Big Show- 4:2
* Billy Gunn- 7:3
* K-Kwik- 12:5
* Tazz- 17:9
* Buff Bagwell- 43:7
* Jerry Lawler- 93:11
Enjoy the live Smackdown tomorrow night, I’ll be back sometime after Smackdown, but before Summerslam. Until then, seeya.
