All right. So we have the biggest cross over star in the history of wrestling coming back into the ring to referee a big main event in just about a month and a half and the media is going to be getting ready to massacre this decision. Well, I’m going to speak from a wrestling fan’s point of view about the Honorable Governor Jesse Ventura stepping back into the ring in a referee’s position.
First, I think that Jesse made the right decision about getting back with the WWF and not the WCW. In his own words, “the past is the past” and he will not let his past law suit against the WWF effect his current involvement with the company. I have to think that Jesse is not doing the “right thing” because I don’t think that there is a right and wrong in this case. Jesse is going to go out there and have fun and that is that. Media men who want to tear into him for going back to the ring after he claimed that it was in his past should all ask themselves why they dig up dirt on people’s pasts only to throw it in their faces.
Jesse brought up the fact that critics would always refer to him as the former professional wrestler and not the former mayor. He feels (and I agree) that if the media seems him as a former professional wrestler and not a former politician, then what is the big deal about him going back into the ring? Hey, if Bill Bradley went out and coached a Knicks game, would that be a big media blitz? No. So why should Ventura refereeing a match be a media disaster? I think that Ventura critics should take a look at their own ideas on professional wrestling as a whole. If they are against the sport all together, then they should not comment on his re-entry into the game. If they are either unbiased or not caring about the sport, then a commentary on the situation is fine. Personally, I think that it is obvious that I am a big wrestling supporter (duh) so my commentary is obviously pro-wrestling. Pro-wrestling…that sounds odd!
It should be noted that at the press conference, Ventura and McMahon had some words of heat with each other where at one point, Ventura told Vince that he was in his state and that he had no power in his state. I am pretty sure that both men were going to stay in character through out the press conference, but they wouldn’t even shake hands. Either they are both great actors (which they are) or there is a legit heat there. Other parts of the conference included Austin handing Ventura a championship belt because “he never got his shot at the title” and Chyna putting Ventura’s old sunglasses and boa on him for some great photo opportunities.
