Would you believe that at this time last year the WWF had only four tag teams? That’s right. They were the New Rockers, the Godwinns, the Bodydonnas, and the Smoking Gunns. Now the WWF is filled with tag teams a plenty as they are setting the standard of excellence in the tag team division.
With only one of the above tag teams still intact (the Godwinns) the WWF is looking for a mix of some old tag teams and some new ones that will set the tag team circuit on fire! With the Legion of Doom back with the WWF, it looks as though if the WWF will finally have the return of Demolition. The LOD and Demolition are two great old teams that can get the WWF’s fans going crazy! The Legion of Doom is shaping up to be the “franchise” team as they are faces in the WWF and always will be. They will be the team that is remembered as the one who walked into a dead tag team division and provided that breath of fresh air that inspired other teams to form, develop, and grow. The Legion of Doom brought back some old memories of some great matches that took place on WWF soil.
Another great tag team is the combination of Doug Furnas and Phil Lafon. While these guys are on the shelf right now, they are still a team that will go down in history in Japan. These two men are perhaps the most underrated stars in the WWF. They are championship material if all you care about is wrestling, but in today’s game, teams need to have fan support. The debut of this team was at the 1996 Survivor Series. Ever since then it seems as though if the WWF fans didn’t care for these two guys. After receiving push after push, the WWF took the low road and turned these two guys heel. They actually drew some response from the audience for a while, but still they were in need of a change. The best thing that could happen to these two guys now is getting healed and getting back into the ring. Being managed by Jim Cornette wouldn’t be bad either.
The Godwinns. What can you say about these two men? Henry O. Godwinn (HOG) started his career as a heel in the WWF. He would bring down a bucket of slop to the ring and after beating his opponent, he would dump slop on them. This led to a feud with Hunter Hearst Helmsley and the Million Dollar Corporation. After being cheated by the Million Dollar Man, HOG went on the high road and became a face. He introduced his cousin Phineas I. Godwinn (PIG) and they acquired the services of Hillbilly Jim as they formed the team of the Godwinns. The Godwinns had it rough because of the weak fan support, but after they began to be managed by Sunny, they went through the roof. However, as soon as the belts left the farmers, so did Sunny. From that point on the Godwinns went on a downward slope until they dropped Hillbilly Jim and became heels. They dropped the gimmick of being stupid and wore only overalls down to the ring. The Godwinns are engulfed in a bitter rivalry with the Legion of Doom. A rivalry that is getting better every time I see it. With the interviews by HOG and the wildness of PIG, the Godwinns have the possibility of regaining those belts for a long time.
The Headbangers are a dynamic duo of fun and excitement. They were originally called the Flying Nuns and managed by Brother Love, but that gimmick was dropped after the lack of fan support. The Headbangers returned about two weeks after the Flying Nuns were dropped. Originally slated to be a jobber tag team, the Headbangers have become the most popular tag team in the WWF. They are getting more and more of a following each week and they are getting ready for those titles to go around their waists. The Headbangers blend a style of high flying and brawling. It is very effective and their opponents know it!!! They won the four corners match at Wrestlemania 13 and since then they have been on an upward spiral. They have dominated their enemies as of late and are not bothered by the fact that they currently are not involved in any feuds. They are great charity workers for the WWF and will soon be a force to reckon with!
Other tag teams in the WWF include the combination of the British Bulldog and Owen Hart, any combination of the Nation of Domination, any combination of the Hart Foundation, and any combination of the Disciples of Apocalypse. The Hart Foundation’s only dominant tag team is the combination of the Bulldog and Owen. Once Bret gets healed, he may wrestle alongside the Anvil Jim Neidhart thus reforming the former tag team champions, the Hart Foundation. While mainly being a singles wrestler, Bret and his brother-in-law would set the tag team division on fire if they ever got back together. The Nation of Domination really only uses the combination of D-Lo Brown and Faarooq when they wrestle. This combination is lethal in the fact that D-Lo provides a youth and vigor that is only seconded by Faarooq’s age and wisdom. Faarooq adds knowledge to this combination and is helping D-Lo turn into a force in the WWF. While this may not happen for some years, it will happen soon. The Nation is backed up by the unstoppable Kama Mustafa and Ahmed Johnson. Both of these men are ready to fill the position if either D-Lo or Faarooq get injured. They both are lethal men and when you add them to the names in the Nation, it is scary. The Disciples of Apocalypse have only made one appearance on WWF TV as I write this, but they are already one of the most popular groups in recent history. The Grimm Twinns are the tag team of the group, but the WWF will make Crush and Lee the tag team of the DOA. These two men combine strength and stamina and should put on some great matches in the near future.
